After flying for over 12 hours, to know that you’re checking in to Generator Hostel Rome is an absolute delight. That’s exactly what our Creative Director experienced on his recent trip to Italy. Having followed the rise and rise of The Generator Hostel brand across Paris, Copenhagen, Venice, it was with great anticipation and expectations to finally be able to stay in one of their properties, and one in his favourite city. And he was completely blown away.
Located in the Esquilino District, which is our Creative Director’s adopted home suburb in Rome, and occupying a heritage building close to Roma Termini and all its neighbouring hustle and bustle, it’s quintessentially Roman, this particular outpost of the affordable, design hostel brand.
With over 80 rooms, most with shared bathroom facilities, but with some en-suite rooms, the property is visually delicious, in its East meets West, modern meets vintage, hipster meets laidback charm decor and interiors.
At the lobby floor, the design onslaught begins with the breakfast and café space and the bar/lounge space. The brekkie are is definitely more aligned towards the scandi, hipster vibe, but the bar space is simply hard to look away, for its juxtaposition of so many visual elements. Simply see the pictures below to understand why.
Our Creative Director also got a room on a high floor, like the 5th level. He had a room with en-suite bathroom and double aspect windows, one overlooking another heritage building and the Esquilino Market and another with view of the skies and Roma Termini. The size of the bathroom is such a godsend compared to the tiny ones he was used to in other hotels and Airbnb set ups, it was pure delight. Plus the decor of the bathroom and the super fragrant toiletries made it such a curated experience. Check out the bedhead of the room below!
The bar in the lobby deserves special mention, not just for its chinoiserie inspired decor, but also its fabulously executed aperitivo special. For 10 Euro, our Creative Director got a Spritz and the following spread below. Can you blame him that he literally went every night for it? #Buonappetito indeed!
A design savvy accommodation is nothing if it doesn’t come with good service, and Generator Hostel Rome definitely delivered. The front of house team were friendly, spoke fluent English and communicated instructions very well. Special mention, the black lady working at the brekkie area, and the female bartender (sorry our Creative Director didn’t get your names!) Your warm, friendly, personable service is exactly what the hostel needs to attract both tourists as well as locals, to cement the hostel as a mainstay in the local Esquilino community. Fatto bene!
Generator Hostel Rome is located at Via Principe Amedeo, 257, 00185 Roma RM, Italy.
